Microsoft, in collaboration with the Fabbrica di San Pietro and Studiogusto, has commissioned Michelangelus, a new typeface inspired by Michelangelo's handwriting and monumental inscriptions. Launching in 2026 across Microsoft 365 applications, the font adapts Michelangelo's visual language to the digital age by extrapolating his design principles to create missing letters and characters rather than simply reproducing his work. The project represents a shift in cultural heritage preservation—treating historical archives as creative material for contemporary design rather than artifacts to protect behind glass.
