The strong coupling constant αs, which describes the force between quarks and gluons in quantum chromodynamics, has been determined to five parts per mille precision using lattice QCD calculations. This improved measurement is crucial for collider physics predictions at the LHC and future experiments, as the strong coupling's previous uncertainty of one in a hundred was becoming a theoretical bottleneck for precision tests.
