Rat is a compiler backend with an x86-64 code generator that uses a priority bin-packing register allocator to map virtual registers to physical registers or stack slots. The allocator visits live ranges by importance and achieves better code quality in 584 lines compared to the previous 1392-line linear scan approach, with design features like callee-saved register preference emerging naturally from the algorithm.
