DARPA selected four quantum hardware companies—Atom Computing, Diraq, IBM, and IonQ—for Stage C of the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, the final verification phase involving direct physical testing of fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures. Stage C will empirically validate whether these platforms can achieve utility-scale quantum computing by 2033, defined as systems whose computational value exceeds capital and operational costs.
