    How the opium trade built one of the great cities

    French Admiral Linois attempted to intercept a British East India Company fleet in the Strait of Malacca in 1804, but British commander Nathaniel Dance bluffed him with merchant ships disguised as warships, forcing the French to retreat. The incident, known as the Battle of Pulo Aura, illustrated British dominance over this crucial maritime chokepoint and foreshadowed their control of regional trade including the opium trade.
