GRAND (Gratuitous Neighbour Discovery) fixes an asymmetry in IPv6 where newly configured hosts can reach routers but routers may not yet know how to reach the hosts, causing latency or packet loss on first return traffic. The mechanism makes hosts proactively advertise their addresses via unsolicited Neighbour Advertisements instead of waiting for routers to discover them reactively. The author implemented GRAND in FreeBSD following RFC 9131 guidelines.
