The barcode was invented to solve supermarket checkout problems like manual price entry, cashier errors, and long wait times. Though the concept emerged in the 1930s, the first commercial UPC barcode wasn't scanned until June 26, 1974, at Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio. Today, barcodes are ubiquitous across retail, manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare, with over 10 billion scanned daily worldwide.
