A new report warns that AI data center e-waste has been vastly underestimated and could reach 395–617 million metric tons by 2050, with projections of 8.6–13.1 million tons retired annually. The Basel Action Network's analysis includes all supporting infrastructure, revealing that previous studies missed about 87 percent of data center waste, and highlights risks from informal recycling exposing workers and environments to toxic materials.
