China imposed a 55% tariff on Brazilian beef after Brazil exhausted its 1.106 million-tonne annual quota, effectively shutting Brazil out of its largest beef market for the remainder of 2026. Brazil sought to use Uruguay's unfilled quota but China has not approved the transfer. The safeguard measure, adopted to protect Chinese cattle farmers facing oversupply, also affects other suppliers including Australia and Uruguay.
