Analysis of 7,384 films shows happy endings remain common (50% of films), contrary to perceptions of 'prestige gloom.' Rather than increasing tragedy, the shift is toward bittersweet endings, which rose from 25% in the 1980s to over a third today, driven largely by action films becoming more morally complex.
