Edward Lorenz discovered in 1961 that tiny differences in initial conditions produce vastly different weather predictions, a principle later popularized as the butterfly effect. However, Lorenz himself was skeptical of the metaphor, and physically, a butterfly cannot actually generate a tornado since its air displacement dissipates as heat long before accumulating into a storm.
