Researchers in India developed a low-cost smartphone attachment that allows community health workers to capture eye images for remote diagnosis by ophthalmologists, achieving 96% agreement with in-person cataract referral decisions. The portable device could expand screening for cataracts and other eye diseases in remote rural areas where access to specialists is limited.
