The 'Bendy Tree', a wych elm in Newcastle, Co Down, has won the UK Tree of the Year competition after surviving over 150 years of coastal storms and Dutch elm disease. It is the first tree from Northern Ireland to win the Woodland Trust's annual contest, receiving 30% of public votes based on this year's theme 'Against all odds'. The tree will represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year finals next year.
