Science fiction doesn't need to be pessimistic to work as storytelling. While post-1960s sci-fi has leaned heavily into dystopian visions, optimistic science fiction can maintain dramatic tension while showing technology solving problems, even those caused by technology itself. Recent examples like The Martian and Interstellar demonstrate this approach is both possible and realistic.
