China authorized construction of the Medog Hydropower Station, a 60,000 MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, which began in July 2025 with an estimated investment exceeding 1 trillion yuan. Upon completion by 2033, it will be the world's largest hydropower facility, generating triple the output of the Three Gorges Dam, though its downstream impact is expected to be limited since most water flow originates from Indian monsoon rainfall rather than Tibetan glacial melt.
