Self-efficacy—a person's belief in their ability to accomplish specific tasks—is a stronger predictor of success than grit and can be shaped by community environments through mastery experiences, observation of similar others, credible encouragement, and managing stress responses. The article argues that open source communities should treat self-efficacy as infrastructure to build and maintain, drawing on research from Albert Bandura and examples from Octavia Butler's work and Afrofuturism.
