Netlify rebuilt its Edge Functions infrastructure to run on Firecracker MicroVMs instead of a hosted execution service, achieving 5x faster median latency (5–6ms vs 25–40ms) while improving security and reliability. The new platform processes about a billion edge functions daily with no changes to how developers write or use Edge Functions.
