    Thought-Terminating Cliché

A thought-terminating cliché is loaded language that ends arguments by replacing substantive points with memorable phrases rather than addressing cognitive dissonance. The term was popularized by Robert Jay Lifton in 1961 to describe how totalitarian environments compress complex problems into reductive, easily memorized phrases that become the sole basis for ideological analysis. Various scholars have since identified such clichés in contexts ranging from cult rhetoric to logical fallacies.
