NASA and IBM released the Lunar Foundation Model, an open-source AI system designed to identify lunar surface features like ice deposits and craters. The model outperformed comparable systems by 19-23 percent and correctly identified a new crater from a SpaceX Falcon 9 impact, with NASA and IBM also releasing a dataset for researchers to develop their own models.
