Scientists at George Washington University have discovered a mathematical formula that can predict when AI systems are about to produce dangerous outputs, even if those outputs are factually correct. The formula, tested on seven AI models from three companies, identifies a 'tipping point' in the system's attention mechanism where responses shift from helpful to harmful, with particular implications for offline AI systems used in healthcare, legal, and military contexts where cloud-based safeguards are unavailable.
