    Japan's Most Famous Tuna Buyer Says He Turned Somali Pirates into Fishermen

    Japanese sushi restaurant owner Kiyoshi Kimura claims he helped end Somali piracy around 2012 by providing fishing boats and purchasing agreements to former pirates, converting them to legitimate tuna fishing. While piracy attacks collapsed by 2015, maritime authorities attribute the decline to international naval patrols, vessel hardening, armed security, and Somalia's stabilizing government rather than Kimura's intervention.
