Vulcan was a hypothetical planet proposed to orbit between Mercury and the Sun, championed by mathematician Urbain Le Verrier to explain anomalies in Mercury's orbit. Despite numerous searches and claimed observations over centuries, its existence was never confirmed and became unnecessary after Einstein's 1915 general relativity theory explained Mercury's orbital peculiarities through spacetime curvature.
