UCF researchers experimentally identified signatures of altermagnetism in a layered cobalt compound, a new form of magnetism combining properties of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. This discovery could enable faster, smaller, and more energy-efficient spintronic devices and next-generation computing technologies by generating spin currents without producing disruptive magnetic fields.
Astronomers detected radio emission from the exoplanet β Pictoris b using the MeerKAT array, marking the first direct observation of auroral radio bursts from a planet outside our Solar System. The detection reveals a magnetic field strength of at least 1.25 kilogauss, providing the first direct measurement of an exoplanet's magnetic field.
