    Breaking the Cipher of the Napoleonic war briefing, unread for 217 years

    A letter sent to General Marmont in March 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars has been decoded after remaining unread for 217 years. The cipher, which contained military briefing information about French and allied army positions ahead of Austria's invasion, was discovered in a 1969 French military journal and solved using modern AI language models.
