Pioneer Labs announced sPL.001, an engineered bacterium designed to grow using Martian soil, water, and atmosphere without requiring Earth-supplied fertilizer or toxin remediation. The microbe produces bioplastics for construction and represents a critical proof-of-concept for terraforming Mars, demonstrating that Earth life can directly utilize Martian nutrients while posing no threat to potential Martian life.
