    Virus-Like 'Jumping Genes' Became Our Partners in Evolution

    Nearly half of human DNA consists of transposable elements, or 'jumping genes,' mobile DNA sequences that can relocate within the genome. Discovered by Barbara McClintock in corn over 80 years ago, these genetic elements were initially seen as parasitic but are now understood as key evolutionary partners that have shaped the development of diverse organisms and biological processes.
