NASA and IBM developed an open-source AI foundation model pretrained on SomBench, a multimodal lunar dataset with nearly two million data bundles across 11 modalities, to help researchers analyze diverse lunar mission data. USRA contributed planetary science expertise through Dr. Rachel Slank. The model matched or outperformed comparison models on crater detection, irregular mare patch segmentation, and polar ice prospectivity tasks.
