Since ChatGPT's November 2022 release, AI-authored content has grown significantly on the internet. By July 2026, about 10% of all English webpages show signs of AI authorship, but over one-third of pages published after ChatGPT's release exhibit AI writing patterns. AI-generated text is most prevalent on .com domains and identifiable through distinctive linguistic patterns like em dashes and specific vocabulary choices.
An analysis of 6,445 Australian websites from the Tranco top-1 million list examined meta tags in their homepages on 19 August 2026. Key findings include 33.2% lacking Open Graph tags, 37.1% of images missing alt text, and only 14.7% declaring a platform via generator tags. The study highlights that missing metadata creates accessibility problems and poor social media sharing, with Open Graph implementation identified as the cheapest and most impactful fix.
