Blue chips are the highest value tokens on the table.
In the stock market, the name stuck.
A blue chip company is one that has been operating long enough to have survived multiple recessions, currency shocks, and sector downturns. Not just survived. Stayed profitable through them.
Three things mark them out.
They are heavily traded, meaning you can buy or sell easily without the price moving sharply against you.
They have a consistent earnings history, which means their profit does not disappear when the economy gets difficult.
They tend to pay dividends, returning a portion of profit to shareholders regularly.
On the NGX right now, names like GTCO, Zenith Bank, Dangote Cement and BUA Foods sit in this category.
None of them are going to triple in a month the way a penny stock might.
That is precisely the point.
Blue chips are not where you go to get rich quickly. They are where you go to build a foundation that holds while you are getting there.
If you are starting out and the idea of watching your portfolio fall sharply keeps you up at night, blue chips are where to begin. Real earnings behind the price, and dividends arriving while you wait.
