physical ai doesn’t just need maps.
it needs to understand what the world actually looks like at ground level.
a map can tell you where a building is.
a satellite can show you the roof.
but neither gives a robot the context of walking into that building, navigating a warehouse, understanding a loading area, or moving through a crowded street.
that’s the gap vangrid is targeting.
instead of deploying expensive mapping equipment everywhere, vangrid turns everyday smartphones into a distributed capture network.
people can record short walkthroughs of real locations, and those captures can be transformed into structured 3d spatial data.
the important part isn’t only collecting the data.
it’s proving where it came from.
captures are fingerprinted with things like timestamps, location information and device data, then anchored onchain through base and ethereum attestation service.
that gives the resulting dataset a verifiable history instead of asking buyers to simply trust whoever collected it.
privacy is also built into the capture process, with faces and license plates blurred before upload.
and there’s already measurable activity around the network.
verified captures, grid events and attestations are being recorded publicly, giving people something they can actually inspect rather than just another roadmap number.
then there’s the incentive layer.
contributors can collect data through the hub and earn ptc, with the token side tied to $van at tge.
what i find interesting is the position vangrid is taking.
not another centralized mapping fleet.
not completely open crowdsourcing with no way to establish provenance.
it’s trying to combine distributed data collection with cryptographic verification.
if physical ai is going to operate in the real world, someone has to build the ground level data layer that lets those systems understand that world.
