We conducted detailed benchmarking of the Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve flight simulator to measure the actual resource consumption of a personal computer. The project is based on the graphics engine Unreal Engine 5 with Nanite virtualized geometry and Lumen atmospheric lighting technologies. Hardware testing was conducted on our benchmark platform running the operating system Windows 11 using the DirectX 12 graphics API. To eliminate the effect of CPU bottlenecks, the stand was equipped with a high-performance chip. AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3DAll system resource and frame rate measurements were performed using the MSI Afterburner utility at maximum graphics settings in three separate screen sizes without scaling.
During gaming sessions, software monitoring recorded extremely high RAM consumption. In real-world gameplay, total system memory usage reached 31229 MB, completely eliminating the possibility of smooth gameplay on 16 GB RAM configurations. The presence of voluminous volumetric clouds, dynamic weather, and seamless streaming of Nanite's high-polygon landscapes quickly filled up the memory. On systems with 16 GB, severe freezes were observed due to constant data flushing to the page file, making 32 GB the minimum threshold for comfortable performance.
The summary results of the benchmarks confirm the high load in all benchmarked separate screens on both NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards and models AMD Radeon RX. The GeForce RTX 5090 configuration consumes 29337 MB at 1080p, 29654 MB at 1440p, and 29580 MB at 4K. On the GeForce graphics card RTX 4090 consumption ranges from 27999 to 28803 MB, and with the GeForce RTX 4080 it reaches 29780 MB. On AMD graphics accelerators, the figures were even higher: a system with Radeon RX 7900 XTX consistently occupies from 30315 to 30439 MB, and in conjunction with Radeon RX 9070 XT consumption reaches a peak of 30902 MB.
