Sony goes digital, skips physical CES 2027 after decades at the show

Sony has apparently decided that physical media is not the only physical thing it can skip. The company has confirmed that neither Sony nor any of its affiliates will exhibit at the physical CES 2027 event in Las Vegas next January.

This ends an unusually long relationship between Sony and CES. Sony products were shown at the first Consumer Electronics Show in 1967, and the company later became one of the event’s largest exhibitors. Sony did not operate its own booth at CES 2026, although its Sony Honda Mobility joint venture still displayed the Afeela electric vehicle there.

No Sony booth at CES 2027

According to Bloomberg, Sony says it is constantly reviewing how it handles events and communications based on what each part of the business needs. In other words, the usual corporate answer that does not really explain much.

There is at least one obvious reason for Sony to care less about CES now. Its Afeela electric car project with Honda gave the company a reason to keep showing up as CES became more focused on automotive technology. That project was scrapped earlier this year, and Sony and Honda said they would review what comes next for the joint venture.

Sony has also been pulling back from traditional consumer electronics. The company now puts more focus on PlayStation, movies, anime and music, while its hardware business is smaller than it used to be. It is still making gaming hardware and accessories, including PlayStation consoles, monitors, headphones and speakers.

So yes, Sony is going digital for CES 2027, at least in the most literal sense. Also no PS6 announcement at CES, it seems.
