$766.4M lost to hacks and phishing in one month.
but that number gets crazy when you look at where it came from.
more than 92% came from just two attacks.
on september 6, the Liquid Network exploit created around 4,000 BTC that wasn't actually backed by real bitcoin.
then on september 24, Bitget lost another $387.5M after attackers compromised part of its wallet infrastructure.
two completely different attacks.
one broke the way a blockchain checked transactions.
the other got around an exchange's internal wallet system.
together, they accounted for more than $700M of September's losses.
and somehow, around $270.6M has already been frozen or returned.
crypto just finished its worst month of the year for security.
