At the center of the integration is CRE, which will orchestrate workflows between financial institutions and Swift’s ledger while allowing institutions to retain control of the keys used to authorize transactions.
Swift’s ledger is designed to support 24/7 cross-border payments using tokenized commercial bank deposits.
• Deposits remain on banks’ own ledgers • Swift’s shared ledger coordinates and validates interbank payment commitments • Banks retain control of keys, assets and funding • Final settlement can continue through RTGS systems, correspondent banking relationships or other agreed mechanisms • 17 banks across six continents are preparing to pilot live tokenized deposit transactions • More than 40 institutions contributed to the ledger’s design • Swift connects 11,500+ institutions across 200+ markets
In June, I found and presented an ICMA document outlining Swift’s broader “interlinking” model.
It described Swift providing a single point of entry into multiple connected public and private distributed ledgers, with Chainlink CRE orchestrating the routing of Swift messages and execution of settlement instructions, while CCIP governs communication between the Swift blockchain and other connected DLTs.
Then on September 1, Genfinity published an interview with Swift’s Nick Kerigan detailing the ledger, its 17 pilot banks, tokenized deposits and 24/7 cross-border settlement.
Kerigan described Swift’s broader strategy as multi-asset, multi-rail and multi-chain.
Today’s announcement confirms another major piece of that architecture.
Chainlink is now confirmed as part of the connectivity and orchestration infrastructure linking financial institutions into Swift’s blockchain ledger, while the broader ICMA architecture shows CRE and CCIP extending that model across connected public and private DLT environments.
In practical terms, the architecture gives financial institutions a single access point through Swift, with Chainlink providing orchestration and cross-chain connectivity into supported public and private DLT environments.
