Microsoft Technology Licensing has published a brand-new patent application showing us a context-aware “ad credit” system designed to serve ads on PC and console gamers without disrupting active gameplay sessions.

Filed under publication number US 2026/0260258 A1 and titled “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access,” the new Microsoft tech aims to bridge the gap between free to play monetization and core gameplay by serving ads only during natural stopping points.

Instead of disrupting gameplay, such as an intense boss fight on an arbitrary timer, the system uses game engine signals for ad delivery. Players start the game with a block of ad-free playtime (e.g., 30 minutes or 1 complete level). As the timer nears its expiration, the ad delivery system opens a brief “promoted content” window.

The game engine sends out natural pause events, such as after clearing a boss fight, end of a cutscene, completion of a quest, entering a loading screen etc. From there, the ad tech freezes the game state to serve a video or static ad and rewards the viewer with a fresh “ad-credit” duration.

A content management system may obtain a promoted content trigger event from an interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application. A content management system may suspend a user’s interaction with the interactive software application based on the promoted content trigger event. A content management system may obtain promoted audiovisual content. A content management system may present the promoted audiovisual content to the user. A content management system may commence the user’s interaction with the interactive software application, A content management system may establish a credit based at least partially on the promoted audiovisual content, wherein the credit delays suspension of the user’s interaction with the interactive software application during a credit duration

The tech is using a strict filtering logic. If a video game engine sends a pause hint to the ad serving system, while the player is still in the middle of boss battle or a match, ad will not be served. An ad break is only fired when a game pause hint lands inside an active listening window.

The tech is most likely to be used in free-to-play games on XBOX, PC, and XBOX cloud gaming in the future. The filing aligns with XBOX initiatives of exploring ad-supported tiers for XBOX Cloud Gaming and free-to-play games. By making ads appear during natural pause points in the game, Microsoft wants to eliminate disruptions but regardless, ads are never going to do down well with gamers.
