The new data on PC shipments for Q3 2026 has been published by IDC, which reveals the reasons for such a huge decline.

PC Shipments Crash 20.1% In Q3 2026 After A 3.8% Q2 Dip, And IDC Warns The Slide Could Deepen

We are already seeing the consequences of soaring PC hardware prices, as this has drastically affected overall PC shipments in the third quarter. Usually, the third quarter witnesses higher shipments than the second quarter, but Q3 2026 appears to be a disaster for most vendors. Here we aren't talking about negative growth in single digits, but in double digits when compared to last year's data.

IDC reports that worldwide PC shipments fell by a staggering 20.1% year-over-year, according to its preliminary results. This is the second consecutive drop in PC shipments this year, after we saw a 3.8% drop in shipments in Q2. Compared to 78.5 million units shipped in Q3 2025, Q3 2026 saw only 62.7 million units shipped, which is one of the steepest declines we have witnessed in recent years.

What we’re seeing is the result of the strong first half pull-in. Vendors and channels loaded up on inventory early in the year to get ahead of price hikes, and that has thrown off the usual seasonality, where Q3 is typically larger than Q2,

IDC reports that this is a result of strong first-half pull-in, as vendors and channels stocked up on inventory ahead of anticipated price hikes. Now, as they carry too much inventory, with PCs carrying a significantly higher price tag than usual, demand has weakened noticeably. Even though promotions and temporary discounts can help with higher sales, this won't help in the long run.

It's expected that prices will stay elevated in the next few quarters, while the broader market could deteriorate further before conditions begin to stabilize. According to the Q3 2026 shipments data, almost every vendor saw a decline in double digits, with HP and Dell witnessing a massive reduction in PC shipments of 30.9% and 25%, respectively. IDC says worsening macro conditions could reduce demand even further, and we could see a further decline in PC shipments in the coming quarters.
