Bitcoin runs on Nakamoto Consensus: one chain, roughly one block every 10 minutes, a hardcoded parameter baked into the protocol that trades speed for security. Push blocks out faster and you risk more orphaned blocks, more forks, more room for an attacker to exploit timing. That tradeoff has been treated as physics for over a decade — the price of decentralized, trustless agreement.

Kaspa's current protocol, GHOSTDAG, already broke part of that assumption. Instead of discarding blocks that arrive close together, it weaves them into a directed acyclic graph — a BlockDAG — and orders them algorithmically, which is how Kaspa already runs at 10 blocks per second without falling apart. But GHOSTDAG still has a parameter, k, tuned in advance based on assumptions about network latency.

DAGKnight, published in 2022 by Kaspa researchers Michael Sutton and Yonatan Sompolinsky, removes that parameter entirely. It's the first proof-of-work ordering protocol that's parameterless, self-stabilizing, and adaptive — meaning it doesn't need a pre-set assumption about how fast the internet is. It watches real network conditions and adjusts block confirmation speed automatically, all while remaining secure against any attacker controlling less than half the network's computational power.

That last part is the detail people skip past. Every previous attempt to make a chain faster has meant trusting something extra — a smaller validator set, a sequencer, a bridge, a committee. DAGKnight doesn't add trust. It removes a fixed assumption and lets the protocol respond to reality instead, using the same proof-of-work security model Bitcoin has run on since 2009.

This is not a marketing upgrade. It's a genuine advance in consensus theory, and it's why researchers outside the Kaspa ecosystem have paid attention to this paper independent of price action.
