Bloomberg reported that President Nayib Bukele’s government is backing a new app called Sivar that uses dollar stablecoins for payments and remittances.
El Salvador’s Bitcoin Office is pushing back:
“The Government of El Salvador has no plans to launch or operate any bitcoin, crypto or stablecoin wallet.”
Coinbase announced today that Sivar is being launched by Modveon, using Coinbase infrastructure to process remittances between the U.S. and El Salvador.
Transfers settle in stablecoins on Base, cost a flat $2 and can be cashed out at more than 1,000 locations across El Salvador.
Coinbase says more than 25,000 Salvadorans signed up ahead of launch.
