then comes the balance sheet for hardware that has to be built, shipped, maintained, and kept online before a single useful observation exists.
@vangrid_io is taking the opposite approach
they call it a zero capex sensor swarm
the graphic is just a phone taken apart
that's the point
the sensor is already in someone's pocket.
vangrid isn't asking the network to finance a new fleet of specialized devices
the bet is that existing edge devices can be coordinated into a distributed spatial data network.
capex didn't disappear
it already happened when the phone was bought.
what vangrid is trying to change is who coordinates those devices and how the resulting data gets turned into something a buyer can actually use.
a buyer doesn't need to purchase a node
they need coverage.
a contributor doesn't need to assemble a rig
they open the capture app and walk the site.
that changes the bottleneck
hardware depin can get stuck on deployment
a phone swarm can get stuck on coordination.
who is standing in the right place?
is the capture actually usable?
does the network have enough coverage where the buyer needs it?
can the system deal with bad captures, blocked areas, or uneven coverage?
that's the tradeoff with using hardware that already exists.
the entry cost can be dramatically different, but the network becomes dependent on participation and capture quality.
phones don't have identical optics
people don't capture every angle perfectly
coverage won't be uniform.
and none of that disappears just because the model is called zero capex
what the phrase still gets right is the cost shape.
a lidar van scales with the number of vans
a phone swarm can scale with the number of people and devices already out in the world.
if physical AI needs ground level coverage on demand, buying and deploying another fleet of dedicated sensors is one path
coordinating the sensors that already exist is the other.
the second one is messier
but it also has a very different scaling curve
and that's why i'm paying attention to this model.
i'd watch density, capture quality, and successful coverage of requested locations
