They focus on a very specific problem proving the authenticity of data from the Internet and performing computations on that data without exposing the raw information.
To put it bluntly, Web3 still relies on Web2 data. Prices, exchange balances, KYC details, agent behaviors, off-chain revenue most of this exists outside the blockchain. Until now, people have had to rely on screenshots, quarterly reports, or third-party-controlled APIs.
Primus takes a different approach: using zkTLS to prove the authenticity of an HTTPS session without revealing the actual content, while FHE handles computation on the encrypted data. Combining these two creates what they call a privacy-preserving verification and computation layer.
The most impressive aspect right now isn't the whitepaper; it’s the Proof of Reserves implementation currently running with Unitas. On-chain data is easy to verify, but the off-chain data such as that on Binance is usually where people have to rely on "blind trust."
Primus proves hedge balances without exposing API keys or account details. The dashboard updates continuously, unlike the semi-annual audits common elsewhere. For stablecoin yields, this goes beyond mere marketing; it becomes a deciding factor for whether people hold the coin.
The logic is similar for AI agents. Agents call APIs, fetch prices and data, and execute trades autonomously. Without a way to verify the data source, an agent is just a "black box" that spends money. Primus targets exactly this issue: proving agent actions without exposing the full context. As agents begin to handle actual payments and contract signings, this capability will become a necessity rather than a "nice-to-have" feature.
I should also note a few caveats. This technology is neither cheap nor simple to integrate, and TEEs (Trusted Execution Environments) still represent a component that requires a degree of trust. While the concept of a "pluggable layer" sounds appealing, ultimate success hinges on genuine liquidity and developer adoption. Initiatives like AlphaNet, extensions, SDKs, and partnerships with Phala, Brevis, and Kaito demonstrate their commitment to transforming research into actual infrastructure rather than mere conference demos.
Viewing Primus solely as a "privacy project" misses the bigger picture; they are building a trust layer for off-chain data. Any entity involved in institutional DeFi, RWAs, or the agent economy that relies on Web2 data will sooner or later need to address this challenge.
