Bitget lost $387 million. Dominic Williams asked chains to freeze the funds. That’s the debate.

We just witnessed a $387 million hack, and the founder of ICP actually tried to do something about it. It’s sparked a real debate.

Bitget got hacked for $387 million, the biggest hack of the year, and their CEO reckons North Korea’s behind it. While everyone else was just posting about it, ICP’s founder Dominic Williams stepped up and called on decentralised networks, $ICP, $RUNE and others, to actually cooperate and freeze the hacker’s funds. Lead from the front on a real problem instead of shrugging.

On the face of it, that’s a great look. Stop a state-linked hacker cashing out? Good. Here’s where it gets interesting. The whole point of decentralised crypto is that nobody can freeze your funds. So the second a network votes to freeze money because most people agree it’s right, you’ve admitted it can freeze anyone’s, if enough people agree. Today it’s a hacker. But who decides next time?

Here’s the irony though. The hackers instantly dumped their stablecoins for ETH, because Tether and Circle can freeze stablecoins, but nobody can freeze ETH.

Fair play to ICP for at least trying to tackle it. But should they? Freeze the hacker, or protect the thing that makes crypto crypto? Tell me where you land https://x.com/RyptoCrypto/status/2105053781012484203
