– Ronald Spektor, 23, is from Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn.
– Over the course of a year, he contacted Coinbase users pretending to be a company representative.
– He told victims their accounts had been compromised by a hacker and their funds needed to move to a new, "safe" wallet.
– Believing they were talking to real Coinbase support, victims transferred their crypto into wallets they thought they controlled, but Spektor could access them too.
– He then emptied the wallets and laundered the funds by swapping them across multiple crypto exchanges before consolidating at what investigators called "cash-out points."
– From there he converted the money into other cryptocurrencies, placed bets with some of it, and cashed out the rest through gift cards and personal spending.
– Total losses reached $15,944,000 from close to 100 victims nationwide.
– Some individual victims lost over $1 MILLION.
– Investigators built the case using blockchain analysis, transaction records, digital forensics and evidence from multiple search warrants.
– He was indicted in December 2025 on 31 counts, including first degree money laundering, first degree grand larceny and first degree criminal possession of stolen property.
– He initially pleaded not guilty. His attorney told ABC7 the transfers were "user-initiated actions."
– On September 2, 2026 he pleaded guilty to the entire 31 count indictment.
– Prosecutors asked for 7 to 21 years.
– Justice Danny Chun sentenced him to 4 to 12 years instead, over the DA's objection.
– He must forfeit more than $500,000 in cash, crypto and property, and pay nearly $16 MILLION in restitution.
– Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez called it "a digital robbery of nearly 100 victims."
