I used to think I needed to wait for the breakout.
I don’t anymore.
Over time, I’ve learned that I much prefer building my positions inside the base rather than buying regular breakouts or chasing extended ones.
If I get the fundamentals right and the technical structure is developing the way I want, I’m comfortable getting positioned while the base is still forming.
I usually look for: - A powerful long-term theme - Accelerating fundamentals - EPS growth above 30% yoy - Stage 1 base or consolidation - Higher lows + signs of accumulation - Support around key MAs / AVWAPs
This is where fundamentals and technicals work together for me. Fundamentals tell me what I want to own. Technicals tell me when I want to start building it.
By the time the breakout comes, I already want to have a position. I’m not looking at the breakout as my entry anymore - I look at it as confirmation.
Recent examples: $HOOD around $105 $RBRK around $75
Past winners: $ARM around $160 $MRVL around $92
I’m not trying to predict the exact bottom of the base. I’m trying to recognize when a great business is building a structure that could eventually lead to its next Stage 2 move.
And position sizing matters.
I don’t need to go full size on day one. I can start building inside the base and add as the technicals improve and the thesis continues to play out.
That’s one of the biggest advantages I’ve found from combining fundamentals + technicals.
But getting in early is only half of it.
The other side of this approach is holding my winners much longer.
Once a position breaks out and enters a strong Stage 2 trend, I don’t want to sell just because I’m up 30%, 50%, or even 100%.
I stay with the trend until something materially changes. And I never make that decision based on a single indicator. It’s always a combination of factors - price action, key MAs/AVWAPs, trend structure, distribution, and whether the fundamentals or original thesis have changed. One indicator breaking doesn’t automatically mean the trend is over.
Getting positioned inside the base gives me the cost basis.
Staying with the trend gives the position enough time to become a multibagger.
