Who really funds open source.

Which companies put real money into open source, and how much? We read what they have publicly pledged or donated, once a month, and count only the dollars someone actually published. No estimates, no guesses.

How it works

- Find- Once a month we collect every funding figure companies have published, from four public sources.

- Count- Only published dollars count. A hidden amount stays at zero rather than becoming a guess.

- Compare- Next month we collect again. Rank and dollars only move once a second snapshot exists.

This month in short

What stands out in this snapshot.

- 01PositLeads the ranking at $762.4k in public funding. $750.1k of that is its 2025 Open Source Pledge; $12.3k is cumulative Open Collective giving, not a yearly figure.

- 02Sentry$750k through the Open Source Pledge, and it sponsors 30 maintainers on GitHub without publishing any amounts. The pledge is not counted a second time.

- 03MicrosoftThe public total is only $10k: a cumulative gift to webpack. Big companies can fund a lot privately, so a low number here is a floor, not a verdict.

Where the numbers come from

Four public sources. Nothing invented.

- 587 - companies appear in - Open Collective- Donations to open source collectives. Totals are cumulative, often over several years.

- 37 - companies appear in - Pledge- A yearly commitment published by companies in the Open Source Pledge.

- 281 - companies appear in - GitHub- Sponsorships of maintainers. The amount only counts when the tier is public, which is rare.

- 10 - companies appear in - Own program- A figure the company publishes about its own open source fund or program.

What we count

- A published amount: a pledge, a collective total, a GitHub tier you can see.

- Each dollar once. A pledge repeated as an own program is not counted twice.

What we never do

- Guess a hidden GitHub tier. If the amount is private, the row stays at zero.

- Multiply a monthly amount by twelve. Cumulative gifts stay labeled cumulative.

Good to know before you quote a number

The amount you can see is not the amount that moved.

$9.1M across the top 200 is a floor. Spam and one self-funded collective were taken out before this file was published.

Nobody pays to appear here or to move up. The rank follows public dollars and nothing else.
