In January 2025, at Nvidia's analyst day during CES, Jensen Huang said that 15 years for very useful quantum computers would be "on the early side," 30 "on the late side," and 20 was a number most people would believe. The next day, January 8, quantum stocks collapsed: IonQ fell 39% and Rigetti 45%. Two months later, at GTC's Quantum Day, he admitted his first reaction had been that he didn't even know these companies were public.
My read then, and now, is that Huang was paying attention to his own shareholders. Nvidia was weeks away from earnings, with questions swirling around its next-generation chip, and quantum was a competing story for the future of compute. I was fortunate: I sold as much of my position as I could and bought back lower. Many investors weren't so lucky. I haven't owned a share of NVDA since, and I never will.
Today's announcement tells the opposite story. IonQ's Superion 256 will be the first quantum computer installed on-premise at Nvidia's Accelerated Quantum Research Center, wired directly to an Nvidia GB200 NVL72 through NVQLink and run on CUDA-Q. This has been in the works for months, which tells me Nvidia has been thinking of quantum fora long time, and carefully choosing the right partner to protect its own market leadership. Nvidia's own quantum lead now says every supercomputer will become a quantum supercomputer.
In January 2025, quantum was a story that threatened Nvidia, so it was dismissed. In 2026, it's an architecture Nvidia can't afford to be left out of, so it's being absorbed. To protect Nvidia, Jensen needs quantum.
