JetKVM Mini is a smaller, lower-cost version of the popular JetKVM KVM over IP solution. The new model features a small information display, offers Ethernet or WiFi connectivity, and supports 1080p video capture.

The main under-the-hood change is that they ditched Linux on a Rockchip RV1106G3 SoC and now rely on an ESP32-P4X (ESP32-P4 version 3.x and greater) to handle video capture, H.264 encoding, USB, and other features. The largest cost saving is removing the RAM and eMMC flash required by Linux.

Switching from Linux to the FreeRTOS-based ESP-IDF framework obviously required a complete rewrite of the firmware for the ESP32-P4X. But the user experience will be the same as the original JetKVM device, using the same protocols to integrate with the same web interface and cloud. The firmware will be open-sourced and released on the company’s GitHub account once the JetKVM Mini is closer to release.

On compatible hosts (Windows, macOS, and Linux), the JetKVM OS Services will enable capture of the target computer’s screen at up to 4K, and add a shared clipboard, a guest terminal, and file transfer support. 4K resolution is possible since video encoding happens on the host rather than the JetKVM Mini.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen an ESP32-P4 IP KVM, and ESP-KVM and P4 KVM projects did that with off-the-shelf hardware, but with ESP32-P4 instead of the newer ESP32-P4X. These are limited to MJPEG or really slow H.264 since an additional color space conversion step is required, and is not needed in the new ESP32-P4X.
