Four months ago, we reported that LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule was busy toiling away on a new IP with “open-world content.”
For those wondering what happened to the studio, they are still alive and kicking on their new unannounced project.
With the studio’s last game, Dreams, having been released in 2020, it’s been six years since we’ve seen anything from the British-based development house. That should be changing in 2027, as that’s when Media Molecule will release its next title.
Media Molecule’s New Game to Feature Social Aspects
According to our sources familiar with the project, Media Molecule’s next game is set to be unveiled and released in 2027.
As to what kind of game it is, it’s a social-simulation-type of game, one that’s inspired by titles such as Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. We were also told it’s not a GaaS (games-as-a-service) title, though we wouldn’t be shocked if it had GaaS elements in it.
Remember: game development is dynamic, and the goalposts do change. While there is a chance Media Molecule’s in-development project won’t get released in 2027 due to how game development is, it will be revealed next year at the very least.
At its core, it seems it won’t follow the footsteps of Dreams. While the title inspired various user-generated experiences, it wasn’t enough for Sony to keep it afloat; just three years in, Media Molecule announced that live service support would end.
In other PlayStation news, another thing we reported on fairly recently is how a new Killzone project is in the works at Guerrilla and an external studio.
