It's been a year since NetherRealm Studios announced that Mortal Kombat 1 was finished with DLC development. As such, they have since moved on to their next project, whatever that may be.

We've seen this song and dance before with NRS when they declared DLC finished for Mortal Kombat 11. They clarified for fans that they moved on to a new project, which we now know was Mortal Kombat 1 all along.

It's been over nine years since Injustice 2 was originally released on May 16, 2017. By releasing Mortal Kombat 1 after Mortal Kombat 11, NRS had effectively broken their "pattern" of alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice releases.

Needless to say, fans are ready to give the Mortal Kombat IP a rest for a bit. More than that, they're eager for a new iteration within the Injustice series.

Things are beginning to get exciting as new rumors suggest that Injustice 3 is indeed coming thanks to a resumé that was posted that curiously mentioned the title.

If true, then we already know about two characters that will have a presence in Injustice 3 — one returning character from Injustice 2 and a newcomer.

Separate from this, it was also posted by FGCentel that Netherrealm Studios was partnering with Insomniac to deliver the first "AAAA fighting game." Out of all the "rumors" out there, Ed Boon of NRS decided to comment on this.

"100% false. Next rumor please," said Boon.

100% false.

Next rumor please.... ;) https://t.co/WEUfQdlCEi

Some time ago, an NDA-covered play test that involved pay was posted in the Culver City, California area. Based on the timing of this, we believe this is related to next project that is being worked on by NRS.

After Boon selectively disconfirmed the Insomniac partnership rumor, another user mentioned the possibilities of NRS testing Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13 or a remaster of Mortal Kombat 9, likely in reference to the aforementioned posting.

Once more, Boon stated outright that these were false. However, he didn't say that they were "100% false" like before. Regardless, the user then began to speculate that NRS could be working on Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe 2.

Next Rumor(s), sure:

1. NRS Is testing IJ3 right now

2. NRS Is testing MK13 right now

3. NRS Is testing MK9 right now

All false.

OMG. It's MK vs DCU 2!

— TotalMK (@TotalMK) September 23, 2026

It would seem that Boon felt the need to clarify once more. Evidently, there could be a major hint at what NRS is now working on based on Boon's comments.

"Appreciate the interest and enthusiasm," replied Boon. "But just because a game isn't currently being tested externally doesn't necessarily mean the game isn't in development."

Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm 👍🏻

But just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development.

The possibilities surrounding Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13 and Mortal Kombat 9 Remastered are now seemingly back on the table. Based on all the rumors and leaks we've been hearing about, as well as the fact that we've already had two Mortal Kombat entries back-to-back at this point, it feels like Boon is very heavily implying that Injustice 3 is NRS' next project.

Given, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt as Boon hasn't confirmed anything outright. However, the fact that Boon is leaving these sort of comments could suggest that NRS will soon be ready to reveal details about their next game project.
