🔐 Hardware Wallet Security Now Extends Beyond the Hardware
A hardware wallet can keep private keys offline and still leave its owner exposed in the physical world.
Recent customer-data incidents involving shipping and order systems connected to Trezor and SafePal are a reminder that self-custody has multiple security layers. The wallets themselves were not compromised in those incidents, but names, contact details, shipping addresses and purchase information can create a different threat surface.
Trezor later said a shipping-provider breach affected additional historical US order data, while SafePal disclosed that order information for roughly 39,798 customers had been accessed. Neither company said seed phrases or private keys were part of the exposed order data.
The security model therefore looks more like this:
Private key security → account security → vendor data security → physical security.
Owning your keys solves an important problem. It does not eliminate phishing, targeted social engineering or the risk created when third parties know where a hardware-wallet customer lives.
Self-custody is becoming an operational-security discipline, not just a device choice.
