## @ShanuMathew93 (Shanu Mathew) · 09-21 14:50 · ♥30 ↻9 💬2 Mauboussin and Callahan’s paper presents a favorable aggregate outlook for hyperscaler returns, with incremental returns troughing around 23% versus an estimated 8% cost of capital. But the company paths differ substantially, and the projected recovery depends on consensus being right.

Forward figures below use consensus as of August 31, 2026. >ROIC: returns on the accumulated capital base >ROIC compares after-tax operating profit with invested capital. It helps assess overall business economics, although consolidated returns can conceal differences between existing operations and new AI investment. >Amazon: recovery from mid-2027. >Alphabet: approximately 30% through 2031. >Microsoft: remains high throughout. >Meta: approximately 40% in early 2025 falls toward 20% by 2031. >Oracle: 13% in Q2 2026, then nearly doubles from the lows. >Nvidia: approximately 48% in Q2 2023 rises toward 200% in 2028. >Micron: approximately 89% in Q1 2027 falls toward 55% by end-2028. >Apple: remains elevated, with recovery during 2026–28.

ROIIC: returns associated with additional investment Incremental returns help assess what additional capital is producing. The paper uses three-year changes in NOPAT with a one-year investment lag. >Amazon: ~35% in Q1’26 → ~15% in Q4’27 → ~45% in 2031. >Alphabet: ~70% in Q4’23 → ~30% in Q4’27 → ~35% in 2031. >Microsoft: ~23% trough in Q2’27 → ~60% in 2030. >Meta: ~70% in Q1’26 → ~16% in Q4’27 → ~13% in 2031. >Oracle: −3% in Q2’24 → ~50% in 2030. >Nvidia: >600% in Q1’26 → below 200% in H2’29. >Micron: >1,000% in Q4’26 → ~35% by end-2029. >Apple: volatile, generally near or above 100% from Q3’25 through late 2028.

If elevated capex persists longer, capacity takes longer to monetize, or incremental cash generation disappoints, both the timing and magnitude of the recovery change. The combined outlook looks attractive conditional on those forecasts; evidence that new capacity is earning the expected returns still needs to arrive. https://x.com/ShanuMathew93/status/2102047714649206869

https://x.com/youngstockuser/status/2102122693076136378
